Keyser began as a small Irish settlement in the mid-1700s. It was called Paddy Town. It went through several name changes over the years, and was eventually named Keyser after William Keyser. Keyser was vice president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which ran through the town. 

Keyser grew significantly due to the activity of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Its growth accelerated during the 1880s and it strengthened its infrastructure and began to acquire more industries than just the railroad. 

Today, Keyser has found employment in health care, education, and service jobs. It is also home to Potomac State College, which continues to develop. 

Keyser covers nearly 2 square miles of land and is home to nearly 5,500 people.
