Keyser began as a small Irish settlement in the mid-1700s. It went through several name changes over the years and was eventually named Keyser after William Keyser. Keyser was vice president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which ran through the town.
Like many towns in the area, Keyser was significantly affected by the railroad. Its growth accelerated during the 1880s, and it strengthened its infrastructure and began to acquire more industries than just the railroad.
Today, Keyser's primary employers are health care, education, and service jobs. It is also home to Potomac State College, which continues to develop.
