Fort Ashby is a census-designated place in Mineral County, West Virginia, located along Patterson Creek. It lies right along the Appalachian Mountain Range.
The town is named for its well-known historic landmark, Fort Ashby. Fort Ashby was built in 1755 on Patterson Creek and run by Colonel John Ashby. The only major battle at Fort Ashy occurred in 1756 when Robert Rutherford and his company of rangers were defeated by the French and Indians.
Today you can visit a museum on the site of the old fort. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Fort Ashby area is rich with Native American artifacts and history. Sections of the lower valley were once the camping grounds of Shawnee warriors. They stopped at these camps when they journeyed to and from hunts. Other Native American tribes also moved through the area regularly.
Arrowheads, graves, and other artifacts are what remain of the strong Native American presence that once characterized the area. There is scarcely a spot in the community around Fort Ashby where you cannot find visible traces of their lives.
Today, the little town of Fort Ashby covers almost 10 square miles and is home to 1,380 people.
