Hancock’s story is rooted in transportation. By the early 1800s, traffic along the old “Bank Road”—soon folded into the National Pike—sparked a building boom through 1818 as inns, blacksmiths, and liveries clustered on today’s Main Street. When the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal reached Hancock in 1839, immigrant canal workers and stonemasons swelled the town and tied it even more tightly to the Potomac corridor. During the Civil War, Confederate artillery under Stonewall Jackson bombarded Hancock on January 5–6, 1862, attempting to disrupt the B&O Railroad and canal traffic; Union forces refused to surrender, and the Confederates withdrew two days later. In the rail era that followed, Western Maryland Railway trains threaded the same narrow valley—today echoed by the Western Maryland Rail Trail, which follows the former WM right-of-way and parallels the canal.
