Berlin
Berlin, PA is located in Somerset County in South Central Pennsylvania. The Somerset County Chamber of Commerce has this to say about the area:
“Somerset County has been called the “Roofgarden of Pennsylvania” as well as “The Land of Milk and Maple.” The county is known for its agriculture, coal mining, wind farms, and various industries.
Mt. Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania at 3,213 feet, is centered in Somerset County among the Laurel and Allegheny mountains. Ski resorts, the Great Allegheny Passage, and many indoor and outdoor activities offer year-round fun for residents and tourists alike in Somerset County.
The area is the right location for your residential, tourist, and economic needs.”
Berlin was settled prior to the Revolutionary War by many German immigrants as well as those of other nationalities. Today the population consists of 2,104 people.
The area is marked by two major historical incidents:
- The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.
- September 11, 2001 when passengers of Flight 93 thwarted a fourth terrorist attack against the U.S. by downing the airliner in a nearby field. This was one of several attacks of the day: the others being against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C.
One deeply moving, local attraction, the Flight 93 Memorial, has this to say:
“On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted.”
Since you are likely from the area, you already know about many of the wonderful things to do and see in Berlin:
- Meyersdale Area Historical Society
- Flight 93 National Memorial
- Kings Covered Bridge
- Rockwood Mill Shoppers & Opera House
- Tower of Voices
- Jager and Friends Dog Park
- Merchant Village
- Young Heart Books & Toys
