Grantsville is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, near the Pennsylvania border. It is part of Garret County, Maryland, and lies about half a mile West of the Casselman River.
If you live here, you are already familiar with the outdoor beauty and local attractions:
- New Germany State Park
- Spruce Forest Artisan Village
- Casselman River Bridge State Park
- House of Yoder
- Blue Moon Antiques
- Lots of beautiful hiking trails and views
Grantsville is surrounded by lovely scenery and traces of rich history. It began as a small Amish and Mennonite settlement called Tomlinson’s or Little Crossing. This settlement grew into a little village that flourished along the nearby U.S. Route 40. During the 1800s, Route 40 saw thousands of pioneers and stagecoaches pass by.
Its location by Route 40 helped tiny Grantsville to thrive. An 1879 article in Harper’s Monthly describes traffic along the road as “so numerous that the leaders of one team had their noses in the trough at the end of the next wagon ahead.”
Today there are multiple historic landmarks left standing in Grantsville, such as the Casselman Bridge, the House of Yoder, and the Casselman Inn, which has provided travelers with food and lodging since 1824.
A notable site in Grantsville is the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, which is made up of some 12 log and frame structures of early vintage. Two of these structures date to the Revolutionary War period. Most of these spaces are home to artisans who work with various different media.
Grantsville covers a little over a mile of land and is home to roughly 800 people.
The Grantsville homepage describes the town this way:
Grantsville is a town steeped in history with several historic sites. The same sense of community has carried over the first settlers to today's entreprenuers. Mainly a town of small business owners, one can find restaurants, groceries, goods and services, medical offices and other buinesses that make up the community that is in place today.
