  • Not quite. A ton of stone/gravel product is typically 0.65 - 0.7 cubic yards.
  • In other words, you need around 1.4 tons to make a yard.

Geographically, Hancock is located at the narrowest part of Maryland. At Hancock, the distance between the PA and West Virginia state lines is only 1.8 miles long.

One of the oldest settlements in Maryland, Hancock used to be the westernmost outpost of the 13 colonies. It got its name from Edward Joseph Hancock, a Revolutionary War hero who fought alongside George Washington.

Hancock experienced a significant boom in growth when the adjoining Bank Road became the National Pike in 1818. New buildings and businesses were added and the town thrived. It also flourished as a commercial center after the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (to this point) in 1839.

During the Civil War Hancock saw constant streams of troops due to its being a border town. In 1862, Stonewall Jackson laid siege to the town but did not overtake it.

Today, the town covers almost 3 square miles of land and is home to over 1,500 people.

The Town of Hancock homepage says this about the town:

Unique in America, the Town of Hancock sits in Maryland’s narrow waist with only 1.8 miles separating the adjacent states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Hancock is the crossroads of so many trails and American history.  Hancock was the westernmost outpost of the original thirteen Colonies. We were in the middle of the Civil War, and the heartbeat of agriculture and small industry in the glory days after World War II.  The C&O Canal, the adjacent Potomac River Heritage Trail, Western Maryland Rail Trail, the current Great Ride and future Great American Rail Trail and the Tuscarora Trail all intersect in Hancock.  After being bypassed by Interstates 68 and 70, our industry and agriculture have disappeared we have suffered through some rough times in the last few decades but are resilient and strong. This small town that we call home is filled with nothing but potential.
