Is a ton the same as a cubic yard?
  • Not quite. A ton of stone/gravel product is typically 0.65 - 0.7 cubic yards.
  • In other words, you need around 1.4 tons to make a yard.

  • Swallow Falls State Park
  • Deep Creek Lake State Park
  • The Garret County Museum of Transportation
  • The Oakland B and O Railroad Museum
  • Splash Island at Will O’ the Wisp

Oakland is home to a historic B and O Railroad station, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and restored in the early 2000s. The station is mainly used for special organizations and gatherings, but trains do still run on the tracks behind it. There is a gift shop inside.

Oakland has a theatre, a museum, a bookstore, and many little antique stores and other shops. Main Street mainly consists of historic, multi-story buildings that house these shops. Many of the homes and businesses in town display Victorian architecture and much of the central section of Oakland is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the main historic sites in town is St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. It is sometimes called the “Church of the Presidents” because several US presidents have all attended services there.

Oakland covers almost 3 square miles of land and was home to nearly 2,000 people at the 2010 census.

The Oakland homepage describes the town this way:

Oakland is a beautiful place to live during all four glorious seasons. Oakland offers serene landscapes that include lakes, streams, forests, waterfalls, farmland, and mountains.  Oakland has a deep history and the town works tirelessly to preserve it. One example is the 1884 Queen Anne-style B&O Train Station, which is now the Oakland B&O Museum.
